NSIENN Research and Advocacy
The NSIENN recognizes the support of the Province of Nova Scotia. We are pleased to work in partnership with the Office of Healthcare Professionals Recruitment to promote our community and provide resources to IENs.
In 2023, the Government of Nova Scotia awarded funding to the NSIENN to conduct the first-of-its-kind province-wide research on the experiences of IENs in integrating into the Nova Scotia health workforce.
This research seeks to address four main objectives:
- To understand the demographic characteristics of IENs in Nova Scotia
- To understand their professional experiences in integrating into the Nova Scotia health workforce
- To understand their community integration experiences
- To identify key priorities and support strategies for addressing systemic barriers facing IENs in Nova Scotia
First phase
In the first phase of this research, we have been interviewing key partners working with IENs to identify key priorities and support strategies for addressing systemic barriers facing IENs in Nova Scotia.
Second Phase
In the second phase, we invite IENs to participate in a survey on their nursing registration experience, job satisfaction, experience of workplace discrimination and harassment, intention to leave nursing, and professional quality of life.

Third Phase
In the third phase, IENs will be invited to participate in a focus group discussion to discuss their professional and community integration experiences.
